SBS Inkigayo, originally known as SBS Popular Song, first aired in 1991 as a ranking program but was cancelled in the fall of 1993. The program was later revived in 1998 with the same name and format. In 2003, the ranking system was replaced by Take 7, featuring the top 7 artists of the week, and the winner would receive the Mutizen Song award.
In the spring of 2007, the program transitioned to live broadcasting in order to increase viewership and changed its English name to The Music Trend. On November 2, 2008, the program changed its airing time from 3:20 to 4:10 pm on Sundays to further attract viewers. In the spring of 2010, the program extended its duration to 70 minutes and started at 3:50 pm on Sundays.
On July 10, 2012, SBS announced the discontinuation of the Take 7 system and Mutizen Song award, starting from July 15, 2012. On March 3, 2013, the program announced the comeback of the ranking system with the Inkigayo Chart, starting from March 17, 2013. The new chart is a collaboration with Gaon Chart by the Korea Music Industry Association.
Starting from August 9, 2020, SBS Inkigayo will continuously invite special MCs by introducing the Special MC Crew, who will replace the main MCs after they leave.
Every week, a new artist will perform live on stage. At the end of the month, a "Super Rookie" will be voted through The Music Trend's official website. This activity was discontinued at the end of 2010.
Many artists have performed campaign songs to raise awareness about various issues, such as safe driving, drinking milk, copyright infringement, and many other events.
